Nigerian Afrobeats powerhouse Ayra Starr has done it again. At the 2026 MOBO Awards, held on March 26 at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, the singer retained her Best International Act title, cementing a consecutive run at the top of one of the most prestigious awards in Black music.
It is a feat made even more remarkable by the field she had to conquer, a shortlist that included Cardi B, Gunna, Kehlani, Tyla, Vybz Kartel, and Mariah The Scientist. The win is the latest chapter in what has become a stunning awards campaign for the 23 year old.
At the 2025 MOBO Awards, staged at Utilita Arena Newcastle, Ayra Starr made history as the first African female artist to win Best International Act and the first female artist in 16 years to win Best African Music Act, beating a category that included Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, and Tems.
That historic double confirmed her not just as a rising star but as a genuine global force, and the 2026 victory proves it was no fluke. Her 2025 MOBO breakthrough followed the success of her sophomore album “The Year I Turned 21,” which earned two Grammy nominations and saw her perform at major festivals like Glastonbury.
With her wins, Ayra Starr joins Wizkid and Burna Boy as the only Nigerian artists to have won the MOBO Award for Best International Act more than once, placing her in the most elite bracket of African music’s global ambassadors. Her back-to-back victories now make her the most decorated Nigerian woman in MOBO history.
The 2026 ceremony marked the MOBO Awards’ 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades of Black music, culture, and creative excellence. That Ayra Starr stood at the centre of that milestone night is fitting.
She represents exactly what the MOBOs have always championed: bold, boundary-pushing artistry rooted in the Black experience and impossible to contain within any single geography. Africa’s girl is the world’s girl, and the MOBOs, for two years running, have made that official.
