Runtown makes the room wait for “Mad Over You.” In [Runtown] Surround Sound, the concert film Spotify premieres today, the song everyone in the crowd came to scream does not arrive until the last of the film’s four parts, after he has walked them through most of the decade around it.
Directed by Tim Horwood, the full-length film was shot in the round in Lagos, with fans packed on every side of the stage.
The film splits the set into four parts, each built around a different mood. The road starts far from home, with “Lagos to Kampala,” then “Tradition” and “Kini Issue.” “If E Happen for Lagos” and “Gallardo” come next, before the set slows into “Dangerous Heart,” “Painkiller” and “High Spirit.” “Mad Over You” opens the final part, followed by “Unleash,” and “Energy” closes the night. By the time the hook lands, the audience has already sung its way through the records that made Runtown a name long before the anniversary.
“We wanted the film to carry that progression and the feeling of being surrounded by people who know these songs intimately. By the time we reach ‘Mad Over You,’ the audience has travelled through the wider world that gives that song its place.”
Tim Horwood, director
That slow walk only works because people are still playing the song. Spotify’s own figures, as of September 15, put “Mad Over You” at 140.7 million lifetime streams. Its 36.6 million streams in 2026 up to that date had already passed the 33.4 million it drew in all of 2025, and listeners have saved it to more than three million playlists of their own.
Rifumo Mdaka, Content Marketing Manager for Spotify in Africa, ties the film directly to that listening. “‘Mad Over You’ has become part of people’s lives, and the listening shows that relationship is still growing,” Mdaka says. “Surround Sound gives us a way to celebrate that connection through Runtown’s wider catalogue, with the artist and his fans at the centre. This film carries the intimacy of the Lagos performance to everyone who wants to experience it.”
Surround Sound is Spotify’s live performance format, born in Sub-Saharan Africa. For the Lagos recordings, the fans around the stage were Spotify Premium listeners invited on the strength of what they actually play.
The song itself turned 10 today, and the story of its decade, including the label fight still attached to it, runs separately.
[Runtown] Surround Sound is streaming now on Spotify.
