The milestone lands in the middle of a year that has already redrawn what a Spotify run looks like for an African artist. Burna Boy became the first from the continent to surpass 50 million monthly listeners in July, a number that has since climbed past 53 million, and he became the first African artist to see eight individual songs cross 300 million streams each following Dai Dai’s rise earlier this year. Fifty songs above 50 million streams sits as a different kind of record, one built less on a single World Cup anthem and more on the accumulated weight of a catalogue that keeps finding new songs to add to the list.
