Maryland spent Labor Day weekend as a diaspora stadium stop. Afro Plus Fest stretched across three nights at the Northwest Stadium Complex in Landover, billed as a major Afro-Caribbean-hip-hop gathering with a projected 40,000 fans a day.
Davido owned Friday. Alkaline took Saturday. On Sunday, September 6, Wizkid closed the bill.
The Surulere-raised Starboy framed the night as a 15-year victory lap. His breakthrough single “Holla at Your Boy,” from the 2011 debut Superstar, still sits at the start of that ledger. The Maryland set pulled from the long catalogue in between: “In My Bed,” “Daddy Yo,” “Bad to Me,” “Slow Down,” “Caro,” “Essence,” “Alaye,” “Jogodo,” “Money Constant,” and “Ojuelegba.”
That list is a tour of eras, not a soft nostalgia set. “Essence” with Tems remains the global crossover. “Money Constant,” the Maphorisa and DJ Tunez collaboration that also carries Mavo, has become a live singalong even after a rocky online reception. “Jogodo” and “Alaye” keep the Asake chemistry in the room.
The supporting cast underlined how far the diaspora calendar has scaled. Tems, Ayra Starr, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, and Adekunle Gold shared the weekend with U.S. hip-hop guests including Lil Baby and Latto. Founder and executive producer Michael Awosanya called the sold-out debut a movement, not a one-off block party.
Wizkid leaves Maryland with the closing slot stamped. The next chapter is already circling another Lagos December date: he is booked to open Detty December Fest 2026 on December 18.
