Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba” Hits 100 Million Spotify Streams, Certified Silver in UK

Wizkid’s 2014 breakout single “Ojuelegba” has crossed 100 million streams on Spotify, becoming the 18th song across all his credits to reach that mark on the platform. The milestone adds to an already dense streaming résumé for the Starboy signee, whose catalogue continues to rack up records more than a decade after some of its biggest entries were released.

“Ojuelegba”, or as it is famously called amongst fans, “The National Anthem” first arrived as the fifth track on Wizkid’s sophomore album Ayo. Its story of hustle and faith, drawn from his early years navigating the neighborhood in central Lagos. The song being named after the place where wizkid grew up, gave it a staying power that outlasted its initial run. That reach widened considerably in 2015 when a remix featuring Drake and Skepta premiered on OVO Sound Radio, introducing the record to international audiences who had no prior context for Wizkid’s catalogue and turning it into one of the clearest entry points into Afrobeats for listeners outside Africa.

The song has now also been certified Silver in the United Kingdom, marking Wizkid’s 14th song to receive that certification in the country. The UK has remained one of the most consistent markets for his music, a relationship built over years of touring, chart placements, and sustained streaming numbers that culminated in his BRIT Billion Award for surpassing one billion cumulative streams in the country.

Ojuelegba remains one of the clearest examples of the fact that timeless music will never lose its essence. A song that shaped the trajectory of modern Afrobeats and is still finding new listeners or retaining the old ones, more than ten years on.
